FAIRBURY – The Fairbury School Board appointed a new member during its February meeting.
Jacie Milius was approved unanimously Monday night to replace Richard Zimmerman, who retired from the board in December after 31 years of service. Milius, a Hastings native, was the only applicant for the opening. She works as a UNL extension educator for Nuckolls, Thayer and Clay Counties and has previously taught family consumer science at Thayer Central.
Board member Sharon Ebke said she was impressed with Milius. Superintendent Stephen Grizzle noted that she also lives in the northwestern part of the school district, while most of the board members live in the southern part.
Also approved during the meeting was the district’s academic calendar for the 2016-17 school year. Among the changes Grizzle noted for the new calendar is that the high school day will be extended by ten minutes and will start at 8:15 rather than 8:25. He also said the new calendar would provide more flexibility for snow days by setting a final date for the school year with the option to subtract days if there are few or no snow days. The first day of the next school year will be August 17.
The next board meeting will be held March 14.
