Viola Mae (Hardy) Herman, daughter of Dickson and Martha (Jones) Hardy, was born March 2, 1924 in Island Grove Township of Gage County, Nebraska.  She passed away June 20th 2011, in Guthrie Center Iowa.  She was 87. During her childhood Vi and her family lived on farms near Zion Hill in the Union Center area.  Her mother passed in childbirth when Vi was only four years old.  Her father was helped with raising her by her older sisters, Mabel and Millie.  The family moved to Blue Springs NE when she was ten. She was united in marriage to her sweetheart, Ralph (Gene) Herman on June 16, 1941 in Beatrice Nebraska.  The two then hopped in a car and drove to San Diego California where Gene served in the Navy and Vi worked as a secretary at McClellin Air Force Base.  After the War, the two returned to Nebraska and lived until 1958 when they moved to Panora, IA. where Vi lived out the rest of her life. Vi loved her family and looked forward to their visits at Thanksgiving and Christmas time where she'd cook wonderful feasts.  She was a collector of thimbles and also put together genealogy records for both the Hardy and Herman families.  She also enjoyed  gardening and spent much of her winters looking through the flower catalogs.  Vi also had a great talent for oil painting and spent many winters in Arizona taking classes and visiting with Marge and Ken Cripe and their families.

Vi was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Mabel and Mildred, her husband Gene and three baby brothers.

Vi is survived by her sister Berniece Mettcher of Wymore, son Gary (Liz) Herman of Council Bluffs, IA, daughter Sheri Herman Heiland of Guthrie Center IA. six grandchildren,  Jason (Herman) Walter of New Orleans LA, Christopher Herman of Austin TX, Kate (Heiland) (Greg) Lawson of Minneapolis MN, Maribeth Jensen of Council Bluffs, IA, Micheal Herman of Omaha NE, Joseph Heiland of Minneapolis MN and one very much awaited and loved great grandson Simon Lawson.

Memorial to the family's choice with the funeral home in charge.

Burial will be at the Blue Springs Cemetery.

Visitation will be at the funeral home from 2:00 P.M. Friday until the time of service on Saturday.

Funeral service will be at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, June 25, 2011 at the Laughlin-Hoevet Funeral Home, 505 N. Ninth Street, Wymore with Pastor Dan Albers of the Wymore United Methodist Church officiating.
