He was baptized in 1927 by Rev. Hershey and confirmed in 1938 by Rev. Dumler. Jarvis grew up in the Davenport area and attended grade school and high school in Davenport.
Jarvis loved farming and worked for different farms after graduation from high school. He met his wife Sylvia Schmitt while working on her father's farm. They were united in marriage on May 27, 1944, in Belleville, Kansas. This union was blessed with three children: Shirley, Lee and Jay. Together they lived on a farm southwest of Sylvia's home place and later they retired to their home in Davenport.
In his younger years he loved to play ball and coached for several years. Jarvis loved horses, working with them and riding them. He also loved his cattle and could pick a certain one out of all his black ones. After retirement he enjoyed gardening.
He served on the School Board District #4 in Oak; on Christ Lutheran Church board and the cemetery board. He helped build the community building in Oak and helped with all the Oregon Trail celebrations. He loved his children, grandchildren and great‑grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Sylvia on Dec. 20, 2005; grandsons, Cory Smalley and Shane Lautenschlager; and brother, Roy Lautenschlager.
He is survived by his 3 children: Shirley Smalley and husband, Joe of Kearney, NE; Lee Lautenschlager and significant other, Linda Griess of Shickley; and Jay Lautenschlager and wife, JeanE of Deshler; sisters: Geneise Braun of Hebron; Sylva Finke of Lincoln; and Marlene Claycamp of Edgar and brother, Irl Lautenschlager of Carter Lake, IA; 4 grandchildren; and 6 great‑grandchildren; many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, June 27, 2011 at 10:30 AM, at Christ Lutheran Church in Davenport, Nebraska with Pastor Stuart Sell officiating. Music will be “You Can Let Go”, “Temporary Home”, “Love Me”, and “If Heaven Weren't So Far Away” by granddaughters Jessica Musil, Jena Stroud. Debra Johnson will be the organist.
Pallbearers are Nick Smalley, Tyler Smalley, Jared Smalley, Lanny Lautenschlager, Bill Stroud, and Patrick Karr. Honorary bearers are Jessica Musil, Jena Stroud, McKenzie Musil, Landon Stroud, Sydney Lautenschlager and Sara Smalley.
