Irene L. Wusk, 96 years of age, of Tecumseh, formerly of Sterling, NE., died Saturday morning, July 9, 2011 at Belle Terrace in Tecumseh. She was born on May 13, 1915 east of Sterling at the home of her paternal grandparents. At the age of three, irene moved with her family to Eckley, Colorado. From Colorado, the family moved to Los Angeles, California. During her teen years, the famiyl returned to Sterling where she graduated from Sterling High School, class of 1934 and taught country schools in the Sterling and Burr areas. On May 23, 1937, Irene married Orville L. Wusk at the home of her parents. They farmed in the Cook and Sterling areas before building a home on the farm southeast of Sterling. They raised eight children. She was confirmed at the St. John American Lutheran Church at Sterling in 1937 and has been an active member since, singing in the choir, teaching Sunday School and Bible School, serving in the Ladies Circle and tying quilts for World Relief in which she was recognized for many years of service. She was active in PTA, Extension Club and the Sterling Memorial Day Activities. After retiring she became a volunteer at the Sterling Senior Center and worked there every Wednesday through the first week of June, 2010. She delivered Meals on Wheels and volunteered for the Red Cross Bloodmobile by calling to schedule donors and was recognized for her years of service. She loved to quilt and made quilts for each child and grandchild. She enjoyed watching birds, especially cardinals, and has an extensive collection of them. She enjoyed word searches, the outdoors, watching cloud formations, picking out walnuts, going to garage sales with Irma, Doris and Donna, and spending time with family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM, on Tuesday, July 12th, 2011 at St. John Lutheran Church of Sterling with Chaplain Doyle Karst officiating. Burial will be at the Sterling Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to the family's choice. Am family prayer service will be held at 10:15 AM Tuesday in the basement of the church. The body will lie in state at the Zink-Fox Funeral Home on Sunday for 1:00 PM until 8:00 PM., on Monday from 8:00 AM until 8:00 PM, and then at the church one hour preceding the service on Tuesday. The family will meet and greet relatives and friends Monday evening from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at the funeral home.
